The Shrine is on a mountainside at an elevation 5300.
The focal point is a 75-foot high cross. Next to the cross is a 30-foot high statue of Our Lady. Close by there is a small field stone chapel honoring the continued presence of Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. The chapel has a Tabernacle donated the St. Patrick's Church in St. Charles IL dating 1924. The shrine is private but open to the public. It was opened March 1998. Saint Mary's Basilica was designed as a Spanish Mission structure. It has four domes that spann the length of the Basilica. The dome located over the altar is topped with a cupola and provides light to the altar. It has the largest collection of stained glass in the state. Pope John Paul II elevated St. Mary's to a minor basilica and visited Phoenix in 1987. St. Mary's became the 32nd basilica in the United States. Web site

Ss. Simon & Jude was established in 1953. When the Diocese of Phoenix was established in December 1969, Ss. Simon & Jude was designated as the Cathedral church. It is the only Cathedral church in the Catholic world dedicated to the honor of the Apostles, Simon and Jude. Both made the Gospel known in various parts of the world, establishing the life of the Church, and shared a martyr's death in their service to the Lord.
The Diocese serves a growing community of almost 800,000 Catholics, in 116 parishes and missions spread throughout four counties in Arizona. Web site

Shrine Of St Joseph of the Mountains

A group of lay people from various parishes in the area started a shrine to St Joseph. The shrine has statues depicting The Last Supper, The Garden of Gethsemane, The Way of the Cross and the Risen Christ. The shrine is opened daily.
Facilities at the shrine include
The House of Joseph Retreat Center. An interfaith facility for groups of people on retreat. The entire complex can accommodate a total of 50 persons, both adults and young adults (16-18 yrs).
Matthew's House -- Ideal for small groups of up to 10 people.
Mark's House -- Accommodates 26 people.
Luke's House -- Accommodate 14 people.
John's House -- Has just been renovated. It is the caretaker's residence and small meditation room.
The Chapel of the Holy Spirit, now under construction is intended as a multi-Christian, interfaith, ecumenical, community Chapel. Web site
