Construction on the cathedral began in 1899 and it was dedicated on August 15 1909.
The exterior is predominately Romanesque, the original interior was plain. In 1917 Right Reverend Joseph S. Glass hired John Theodore Comes one of the best architects of the era to redesign the interior. Comes added the murals and shrines that are in the cathedral today.
Extensive renovation and restoration were started in 1991 and by 1993 the cathedral was returned to its’ original splendor.
The cathedral is listed on the Utah and the national registers of historic places.
